However, when you get there, the reality is that they have let spaces out to all and sundry - there is no sense of focus or community there and there are several inappropriate places locked off or down. The advertising is gratuitous and some of the items for sale seem bizarre.
The cost of an Island doesn't go away - it's merely transferred to others - in that case an OS sponsor - however if you walk around the ~Island you'll see little evidence of community cohesion.
On the Learn 4 Life Island we have encouraged anyone joining to have their own funding stream which offsets the cost of risk to me as an Island owner but gives added benefits to people renting space. However the main thing is that everyone on L4L -from the Autumn onwards - will be pointing in the same direction as far as innovation and pedagogy are concerned and there should (hopefully) be more chance of a cohesive community and positive set of interactions between educationalists.
I'm surprised the OS community could not see this and I find it unfortunate that they didn't take the time to think it out more carefully. It's not just a question of getting free or low rent space it's all about people I guess.
